A lot of people can tell you what you need to do in order for your blog to help your business, but they may not know if it is actually hurting it.  There are a number of different ways that a blog can be a big disadvantage.  Keep in mind that a blog is a very effectively tool when used correctly, yet when used incorrectly it can be just as damaging. Here are 3 signs that  your blog may be hurting  your business.

1.No Time

The easiest way for your blog to become a detriment is to not to devote the time to it that it needs to be useful. Unfortunately, there are not very many web presences that people don’t judge.  They either like it or they don’t. Any negative online perception of your business should be avoided so it is vital that you are giving your blog the time that it requires. Most business’s are more than happy to devote some time to upload articles but that isn’t nearly enough.  Blogs are supposed to be interactive and regularly updated. That means that along with adding content on a regular basis, you also need to make sure that someone is responding to questions and comments on each and every post.  While you may not need to respond to each comment directly, you still need to allot enough time to make this decision and carry it out.

2.No Focus

Another sign that your blog is hurting your business is that it lacks focus.  If your business is selling used cars then when people go to your blog, they want to read about topics related to used cars as well as your business itself. If they show up and your blog is talking about last weekends golf tournament then it is not going to be received well. If your blog lacks focus, it shows your prospective customers that you are either not smart enough to run one correctly or you don’t care about what they want to read.  Either way it spells bad things.

3.Minimal Resources

If you are not devoting enough resources to your blog then your website visitors will notice.  There are a lot of different areas where your resources are needed.  The first is to create and maintain your social profile. Many businesses don’t realize it, but your blog is often going to be an extension of your other social media profiles. If you have a blog, but do not allow your readers to connect with you on other social networking sites then your blog will suffer.  Another way to view this problem is by looking at your expenses vs. your gains.  Even if you are only putting in the bare minimum to support your blog, it is going to be wasted if your blog doesn’t become a productive tool.  With adequate resources, your blog can be one of your best online tools.  The best part is that the amount of money that needs to be spent maintaining your blog is nothing compared to a television or radio campaign.

If you can look at your blog and see that one or more of these factors can be applied to your blog, then there is a chance that it is doing more harm than good.  Fortunately, creating a remedy for this situation is fairly straightforward. If you don’t know how to add more focus or don’t have the time, then outsourcing your blog maintenance should be considered as an option.  Not only is it cost-effective but it also ensures that your blog is helping rather than hurting your online presence.
