If you’ve ever done a search for anything online, no matter which search engine you prefer to use, you know that you can often get thousands of pages of results.

More than likely you are like the majority of people online and rarely look at the results much past the first page or two.

If you want your website to get noticed it is definitely in your best interest to get your website at the top of the search results. If you can get your site to the top 3 or 4 spots on the first page of results you can get many visitors to your site for free.

This free traffic is called organic traffic. This is a great method of traffic generation. The trick to using search engine keywords is to target just the right keywords.

As you can imagine, some keywords have much more competition than others. If you try to use a keyword that is getting a lot of searches in a very popular niche, you will be lucky if your site ends up on page 1,300,000 of the results.

To see what I mean, type in a broad, generic phrase like “weight loss” and see how many pages of results there are. Then take a look at the top 3 or 4 sites that show up. More than likely they will be sites that are run by large companies.

That is because these companies can afford to hire whole staffs to work on their seo efforts. They can also afford to pay money for pay per click campaigns, no matter how expensive the bid prices are for that keyword.

For most of us, that isn’t an option. So, you want to target longer keywords that still get a lot of searches but will have far less competition.

For this example, lets say that you target the keyword “best weight loss programs for women”. I know, it’s a mouthful, but a long tailed keyword like this will most likely still get a lot of searches every month but the competition will be much less.

Another great benefit to long tailed keywords is that they are more targeted keywords. For example, the keyword weight loss is very broad and generic. It could be targeted to pretty much anyone. But the long tailed keyword “best weight loss programs for women” is much more focused so the women who are looking for such a program are likely to buy one when they find it.

The long tailed keywords are more specific and that means they are usually “buying” keywords. This is great since you will have more sales if you target buying keywords.

As I’m sure you can see, picking out the best search engine keywords is an important first step to online success. It doesn’t matter if you do it manually or use a software program, get a great list of keywords and the money will follow.

These software programs will allow you to customize what keywords you want to add to your list, all on autopilot. But, even with a keyword marketing tool, there are still many options you can choose from.

Some of these programs are quite basic and will only provide you with the most preliminary information. On the positive side, the more basic the tool, the less it will cost you. This can provide a great alternative to anyone who is just starting out and has a very limited budget.

If all you want is just a basic list of keywords that provide you with basic information such as the number of monthly searches and level of competition, you can even just use the free Google keyword tool.

Remember, as you put together your list, that you don’t want to target the keywords that get huge monthly searches. I know this may sound counter intuitive, but the keywords that get a lot of searches are very competitive and it’s very difficult to rank well for them.

Those keywords are usually beneficial only to the big companies that have full time staffs doing their keyword and marketing research. A little guy just can’t compete.

But, why bother trying to compete on the overly competitive keywords when you can get a nice long list of great keywords that still get a lot of traffic but don’t have nearly as much competition?

When you are ready to move up and your marketing skills have increased to the point where you need more information about each keyword you add to your list, you can find many keyword programs that will give you all the information you could ever use.

Of course, with all this functionality does come a price tag. There are several of these highly detailed keyword software programs on the market today and before you make a purchase you should take time to compare them side by side to find the one that offers you the best combination of features and price.

Another thing to consider before you actually buy, is the quality of the customer service should you have any problems or questions. A good way to find out unbiased information on the programs you are considering, is to visit internet marketing forums and ask.

Many of the people who participate in the forums have used this type of software and can provide you with some insight as to which one works best for them.

While this can be helpful at the end of the day it’s all about what you want, need, can afford and feel comfortable with. Many of these programs will actually allow you to use them for a short period before you buy to see if you like them. That is always a good idea.

Once they “notice” your site, they can rank your site high on the results page for the keyword term that you were targeting. The higher the rank of your website, the more people who will see it and go to it.

Think about it, when you do a search online do you look at any of the results that are on the second or third page of results? Most people don’t. Even if you do go to page 2 or 3, you probably don’t go much further.

So if you choose the right keywords to rank for and you end up on page one of the results, you will get a lot of visitors to your site. This is the whole concept behind search engine marketing keyword.

Of course, with this type of strategy, one of the most important things you can do is to find the right keywords to optimize your site around. And this all begins by doing keyword research.

For SEO you want very targeted and relevant keywords. If your website is all about bird houses, you don’t want to use keywords that aren’t relevant. If your site has nothing to do with bird watching, for example, you don’t want to use that as a keyword.

One of the things that search engines look for when ranking sites is relevance. How relevant is your site and how on target is the content of your site to the keywords you are trying to rank for? If you are very targeted you may get rewarded with a high ranking, if you aren’t targeted, you will be “punished” by a low ranking.

If your site is seasonal make sure you account for that in your marketing efforts. To use my example above about bird houses (and I apologize right now if I’m wrong in my next example, it is just an example) lets say that you decide to highlight bird houses for cardinals during the winter months.

You can then switch back and target bird houses for robins in the spring. You get the idea, keep it fresh, and current.

Keep an eye of your traffic levels. There may come a time when one of the keywords that had worked really well for you no longer pulls in the same amount of traffic. There are many reasons for this but the most common is that your niche has more competitors and more people are trying to rank for the same keyword (and maybe doing it better than you are).

When setting up your search engine marketing keyword campaigns, remember that your success will lie almost exclusively with choosing the right keywords. Use tools to help you with the process but ultimately, just try to think like your customers.
