The past few days have been beautiful, the weather nearly perfect and many of us are suffering from spring fever. Many others are suffering from the pollen levels. This time of year reminds us that summer is coming and things are about to slow down in networking. Let’s take a moment to discuss this trend and what may be cause of it.

Let’s begin with the fall.
We are working feverishly at this time of year trying to gain new business we realize that around the holidays things are going to slow down. As December approaches, many of us will become preoccupied with things like parties and shopping and our attention to building our business wanes. Many others find it difficult to make contact because many are beginning long vacations.

The holidays pass. Now we put our marketing and networking efforts into high gear, trying to get things cranked up once again. Increased business and increased profits are the result of this extra effort. In the early part of February things begin to pick up at an almost maddening pace. When this occurs, unless we are prepared for growth, we start to slack off on our promotions because we are scrambling to complete the work that has been generated by our marketing efforts.

What happens? We stop networking. We lose contact with those we have benn making and asking for refferals. They begin to feel as if we are no longer interested in them. Now when this happens, they may look for someone else to refer when that target prospect comes along.

In early to mid summer, we are beginning to get out from under the workload and we begin looking for opportunities. Guess what. Vacations have started as children are getting out of school for the summer. It becomes difficult once again to find the contacts that were out there when our business picked up again in late winter.

Now it is mid August. School is back in session and people are starting to come back to the networking world. We are seeing many of the same people that were ther before, but there are a lot of new faces as well. Due to the fact we slacked off on our promotion efforts, we were not there to greet the new people as they started their new business. So the people who have a balanced networking and marketing strategy are there to greet them.

These happen to be the people who have businesses that seem to be growing. The have a network and marketing strategy that is consistent year round. While many businesses are experiencing that new growth on the spring, these business owners are ready to absorb the new business with either new employees or temporary help. They realize that in order to maintain growth they have to be ready for any upswing ion the economy that could propel their business to the next level.

How is this accomplished? First you have to plan for growth. Have a plaan in place for when you have more business than you can handle so that their is help to call. This is managed by building relationships with placement firms, temp. agencies etc. You can hire people on a contract basis if nesessary. This will also save you money on benefits and salaries when things are a bit slower.

You need to develope a plan for networking that is manageable. Set a goal for the amount of meetings that you can attend when business is just okay and stick to it when business gets better. Attend functions year round.
